Musings from the Mayor of the Internet

Itoi and Miyamoto

So as part of the Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary celebration — which, no fooling, makes me feel really really old — Shigesato Itoi has interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto about what it’s like to make Mario games. In the process, they wander all over the map, but it all comes back to game design. The interview’s pretty long, and the translation is… interesting, but it’s a good read.

  1. I’m like barely into it and I’m going crazy. I don’t know if it’s the translation or just the endless dance that’s part of Japanese etiquette, but the “I’m not going to ask this” / “I wish I had the vocabulary to describe the things you will not ask” is driving me batshit.

  2. Yeah, the first page is pretty bullshit like that. But once you get through the endless crazy-man talk, the meat of the interview is interesting.

I’m assuming it’s largely the translation, since I don’t get why Itoi would spend a whole goddamn page saying “I’m not going to ask about X, but, seriously, what’s up with X?”
