Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando System: Playstation 2 The sequel to one of the best games I've played lately. How does it measure up? Well, it's also one of the best games I've played lately. In fact, upon reflection, I have to give it the nod over its excellent predecessor, if only because it takes basically the same system and the same gameplay and adds aiming capabilities. Pure gaming bliss. The "look-and-feel" is almost identical to that of the first Ratchet & Clank, only without the texture swim. The levels are still vibrant and diverse, the monsters are still varied, and the sound is still suitably catchy and involving. This game (for reasons not unrelated to the advent of an aiming system) is heavier on the shooting and lighter on the platforming than the first, but not so much as to put anybody off. It features several improvements, including the ability to upgrade the various weapons, and also a "challenge mode" after completing the game - a second run-through with harder monsters, more bolts, and even more weapons. The voice acting is good once again, though the cast suffers sharply from the absence of Chairman Drek. One can only hope he'll return someday. Even without him, though, the cutscenes will be sure to entertain, though Abercrombie Fizzwidget gets old long before he's through talking. In short, there's a lot of game here, and almost nothing not to like about it. I give it my highest recommendation. |
